Hula Hooping with Pinto Bella
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The Pinto Bella Hoops has become a favorite of students and families around the USA. To start off the program, Pinto Bella speaks about the emotional, physical, and social benefits of hula hooping, describes the different types of hula hoops and their purposes, gives a brief history of the hula hoop, and tells audiences about her own journey with the hoop.
After some brief hula hooping instructions, demonstration, and a short performance of where Hoop Dance can take a performer, the group gets to try hula hooping themselves,
while Pinto Bella walks around to give one on one instruction, trouble shooting, and help with new tricks. After the group has all had opportunities to play and hoop around, we take some time for organized games that teach team work and communication with the hoop!
To finish the day, every one finds a seat, we lower the lights, and Pinto Bella performs one last number with her LED light up hoops. Of course, we keep this a surprise for the kids until the final moment!

On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!

Summer Reading Registration

Sign-up for the Storrs Library Summer Reading Program! All ages are invited to register for 'On Your Mark, Get Set, READ' and enjoy our daily activities. Earn prizes, enter a contest, find Scout, our brain-building summer mascot, guess how many items in the guessing jar, attend one of our many programs, and so much more! Visit the Philip Michael Lauro II Discovery Room to register and pick up reading logs. Reading throughout the summer will take you on 'active' adventures as well as maintain reading skills. This program is sponsored by The Massachusetts Library Board of Commissioners, Boston Bruins, Longmeadow Cultural Council, and many local businesses.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Guess! - Weekly Guessing Jar

Guess how many candies are in our weekly themed jars. Every time you visit Storrs Library you can make another guess. Every Monday we will announce the person who guessed the closest and they win the whole jar!

Take and Makes for all Fitness Levels

Every week of the Summer Reading Program, the Storrs Library Philip Michael Lauro II Discovery Room will offer a new 'Take and Make' craft (complete kits you can take home and make). A new craft will be available every Monday until they are gone. Create a flag, chef hat, clown costume, Olympic torch, paddle ball game, stress ball, chia pet, and more. Come in for your weekly kit while they last!

Win the Race to Help Others - Outreach Activities:

Storrs Library invites patrons to join us in supporting two worthy organizations this summer:

1) Square One

square one
Our first outreach activity will help Square One with their child and family assistance programs. Please donate school supplies, diapers, and wipes to help this worthy organization as they assist families in need. Choose a running rabbit and turtle from our 'Win the Race to Help Others' display, purchase the designated item, and bring it into the library. When your donation is received you may then hang your 'I'm a Winner' badge to show that you have helped others.

2) The Zoo in Forest Park

Zoo in Forest Park
Our second outreach activity will raise funds to help care for the animals at The Zoo in Forest Park. The Zoo features exotic and indigenous animals representing a large variety of species found throughout the world and is dedicated to wildlife education. Children can take a chance at winning one of our many 'zoo prizes' by purchasing a raffle ticket for 25¢ or 5 for $1.00. Storrs Library staff members have agreed to match raffle ticket proceeds with personal monetary donations for this worthy cause. All proceeds will be donated to the zoo.

Exercise your Brain Scavenger Hunt

Every week of the summer, Scout, our K-9 companion, will be hiding somewhere different in the Storrs Library Discovery Room. Your job is to find Scout from the directions we give you and make note on your very own Discovery Room map. By the end of the summer your mission is to complete the map with all your orienteering assignments. Your participation will earn you a Discovery Dollar and a chance to win Scout!
