Changes Coming to eBooks January 2020

Changes and improvements are being made to our eBook offerings. To better protect user privacy, beginning on January 21, 2020, Storrs Library & CW MARS library patrons will be required to provide both their library card number and password to log in to borrow any materials through Overdrive and/or Libby.

If you are a Libby or OverDrive user already, you will be logged out of your account on January 21 and prompted to log back in with a password. The password is the same password used to log in to your individual library account. If you are not sure what your password is, try the password reset link or contact us at Storrs Library and we will be happy to reset it for you over the phone or in person.

Get Started Borrowing eBooks & More

Using OverDrive and/or Libby app, Storrs Library patrons are eligible to borrow eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and more that can be read on personal devices such as: Kindles; iOS devices using version 9 or higher; Android devices using version 4.4 or higher; Chromebooks; mobile devices and/or computers. Library patrons can use OverDrive and/or the Libby app to borrow these digital materials. Both the OverDrive and Libby apps provide access to the same content from the CW MARS Overdrive Collection, but there are some differences between the capabilities of each app.

The Libby App is a newer app created by OverDrive. The Libby app makes it easy to switch between multiple library collections and find all your loans and holds on one shelf. The Libby app is compatible with most devices, not including Kindle. For instructions on installing the app and/or downloading materials using Libby, please visit Libby’s help page or ask us at the Reference Desk.

The OverDrive app is the “classic app,” and includes some features that are not yet available in the Libby app, such as streaming video, recommendations, as well as compatibility with Kindle Fire, MP3 players, and screen readers. For instructions on installing the app and/or downloading materials using Overdrive, please visit Overdrive’s help page or ask us at the Reference Desk.

Borrowing an eBook or eAudiobook from Partner Libraries

Storrs Library Card Holders belong to a larger library network, CW MARS, which allows Storrs Library Card Holders to enjoy access to materials from Storrs Library and Central and Western Massachusetts. Storrs Library’s membership to CW MARS is the reason why Storrs Library Card Holders can visit neighboring libraries and checkout materials using their Storrs Library card, negating the need to sign up for a library card at each library individually. To put it succinctly, Storrs Library Card Holders are also considered CW MARS Library Card Holders.

CW MARS Library Card Holders are eligible to borrow eBooks from Partner Library Systems across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This expands the reach and availability of materials to library patrons across the Commonwealth. CW MARS Library Card Holders can use their individual library card number to borrow eBooks & more via the OverDrive and/or Libby apps. Partner Libraries include:

  • Boston Public Library
  • CLAMS
  • Merrimack Valley Library Consortium
  • Minuteman Library Network
  • NOBLE: North of Boston Library Exchange
  • Old Colony Library Network
  • SAILS Library Network

CW MARS and the aforementioned Partner Libraries are able to make their eBook Collections shareable across networks thanks to Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioner’s (MBLC’s) program, Library eBooks and Audiobooks (LEA). The additional funding and support from MBLC will help ensure the timely availability of materials and variety of content.

To benefit from an extended selection of eBooks and digital materials, CW MARS library patrons can add Partner Libraries to the Libby or OverDrive apps and/or via the Digital Collection website (https://cwmars.overdrive.com/).
